I was surprised by this Japanese whisky as I was expecting it to be a bit harsh and lacking the complex flavours of most Scottish malts. This was smooth and had some interesting but rather simple fruity flavours which were enhanced by the mild peatyness. Pleasant but not robust.
There seems to be a lot of reviewers with elementary grammar commenting on these specialized whiskys, the truth is you may spend good money on on a well crafted whisky you simply don’t like, it’s all it the eye of the taster, but before you tear down a finely crafted product like Hakushu you should take more time to understand the complexity of regional whisky.

This Japanese 12 year old whisky is just superb, everything about it is perfectly balanced from the very first nosing, typical Japanese know how from start to finish… Green cut grass effect, slightly herbal with nuances of both apple & pear ending with orange peel, very clean with a hint of sweetness, enjoy neat or with a few drops of pure filtered spring water. Heavenly whisky!!!
This is a great whisky. The Japaneses oak offers a rich and unique taste that you will not find in other whiskeys. it’s something to savor. If your used to Irish, Scotch, American. You will be glad of the experience.
